Nel periodo storico identificato come Medio Evo, una figura poco conosciuta dalla maggioranza, ma non certo per gli esperti di questo settore, era il costruttore di archi, nella dizione del tempo MASTRO ARCAIO.
Era questo prezioso artigiano che si occupava della costruzione degli archi, delle frecce e di tutto il necessario per gli uomini che, nei momenti di pericolo, si trasformavano in arcieri, per la difesa del territorio e della popolazione ad esso collegato.
Già nella Firenze del Tardo Medioevo si ritrovano scritti che descrivono leggi e consuetudini che regolavano lo sfruttamento delle risorse forestali, tra le quali, quelle collegate alla raccolta del legname per archi e frecce. Tale utilizzo era appannaggio esclusivo di determinati artigiani come: Angelo, figlio di Iovannino, Testa, figlio di Tebaldino e altri come Tuccio e la moglie Tessa che, molto probabilmente avevano la concessione di raccogliere e utilizzare legname per uso militare. Ma nella seconda metà del “300” l’arco entra prepotentemente in Italia e a Firenze con un gruppo di veterani della Guerra dei Cento Anni che, capeggiati da Sir John Hawkwood passerà al servizio di varie Signorie tra cui Firenze. Un particolare interessante della Compagnia di Hawkwood, (italianizzato da N. Machiavelli in Giovanni Acuto) fu appunto l´introduzione nell´Italia Medievale del long bow, il micidiale arco lungo di tipo inglese che modificò le sorti di tante battaglie.
In questo contesto, cercano di collocarsi due appassionati d’arcieria medievale che riproducono, con le loro rappresentazioni, nell’ambientazione di feste, rievocazioni e manifestazioni medievali, la bottega di Mastro Arcaio; lì si potrà vedere, in diretta, la costruzione di archi medievali, long bow e ricurvi con vari tipi di legno inoltre, le frecce, le corde, le faretre e tutte le attrezzature che fanno parte del corredo dell’arciere medievale.
E’ un tuffo suggestivo nel passato che Roberto e Donatella cercano di far rivivere, con umiltà e tanto entusiasmo, quell’entusiasmo che lo spettatore percepisce in maniera tangibile, tanto che spesso, gli spettatori s’iscrivono poi ai corsi che Roberto organizza, in altra sede, per insegnare a costruire e ad utilizzare archi medievali in legno. Lo scoccare una freccia è un gesto ricco di significati profondi, specie se applicato al tiro istintivo. Quel tipo di tiro che Roberto e Donatella insegnano e trasmettono a chi vuole provare l´antica emozione.

In the historical period identified as the Middle Ages, a character not very well-known by the most but very famous for the experts in the matter, was the builder of bows. In the tradition of that time this character was named as MASTRO ARCAIO.
This valuable craftsman was involved in the construction of bows, arrows, and everything that was needed to men which, in times of danger, became archers to defend both the territory and its people. During the late Middle Ages, Florence was already organised with laws and customs regulating the exploitation of forest resources, including those related to the collection of wood for bows and arrows. Such use was exclusively reserved to certain craftsmen, such as Angelo, son of Iovannino, Testa, son of Tebaldino and others like Tuccio and his wife Tessa, who probably had the concession to collect and use timber for military use. It was in the second half of the “300” that bow entered overbearingly in Italy and Florence too, thanks to a group of veterans of the Hundred Years War led by Sir John Hawkwood, which went in service of various lordships, including Florence. An interesting distinguishing detail of the Society of Hawkwood (whose name was italianised by N. Machiavelli as Giovanni Acuto) was precisely the introduction in the medieval Italy of the long bow, the deadly English type longbow which turned the destiny of so many battles.
This is the scenario where two medieval archery enthusiasts like to play. It is by means of their own performances, setting for festivals, medieval re-enactments and demonstrations that these two enthusiasts want to reproduce the workshop of MASTRO ARCAIO. At this workshop you will see, live, the manufacturing of medieval bows, long bows and crooked bows as well, by using various types of wood. There you will also attend to the manufacturing of arrows, strings, quivers, and all of the equipments that are part of the kit of medieval archers.
It is a fascinating journey into the past that Roberto and Donatella want to make live again. With humility and so much enthusiasm !! And it is just this enthusiasm that the viewer perceives in a tangible way, so that often the audience then enrols in the courses that Roberto organises elsewhere, to teach to build and to use medieval wooden bows. Shooting an arrow is an act full of deep meanings, especially when applied to instinctive shooting. That kind of shot is what Roberto and Donatella teach and pass to those who want to feel the old excitement.
